tom bihn archetype

i have never met a guy who isn’t into bags. not necessarily murses, but every guy loves to find new backpacks, messenger bags, and cases of all kinds. we can’t help ourselves any more than a woman can help herself around shoes or purses.

no matter what bag you have, you’re going to take your laptop along with you at some point, and you’re going to want to protect it. which is why finding the right form-fitting padded case is just as important as finding the right bag. and josh spear has found us that case.

tom bihn is a dude, well he’s actually alot of dudes in seattle who make some crazy good bags, but they’re not really my style. however the archetype case for mac laptops is just my thing. a form fitting padded case with a handle that is covered in fabric made from cork. how cool is that? these will totally go with the medium arborists if you bought a pair. and, you know, feel a need to match your bag and shoes. they make one to fit every recent mac laptop.

timbuk2 toeclip

there’s something about the asthetic of old-school cycling. the simple clean lines of low tech bikes. the natural materials of the old clothing and bags. it’s all making a come back with the rise of fixed gears and single speeds and companies like castelli re-issuing old school wool cycling sweaters. and timbuk2, one of our favorite bag companies is hopping on the trend in the best possible way. they’ve just launched a still secret series of bags called single speeds.

they’re made of heavy cotton instead of cordura, and the straps are leather toe-clip straps instead of the webbing and plastic buckles on their standard models. they’re also fairly simple designs. not that timbuk 2 makes overly complicated bags but one looks at these and you know they’re classic.

although it’s one of the smallest in the series, i have to say i think the toe clip is the hottest of the range. even though it’s small, it’s not so small as to look like a murse (like the musette). it’s design harks back to old school book bags, which has always been a popular style for high end designers – and the two toe-clip straps really work for that design. the inside is simple, and find that a minimum of pockets and organizers allow you to use bags for more tasks, minimizing the number of bags you have to shop for. finally the shoulder strap is sewn in, not on D-rings, which means it won’t bunch or twist or otherwise get fucked up like it could on the relay.

lomo sidekick

some guys can get away with just carrying a cell phone, a wallet and their keys. others, whether it’s every day, when they’re out and about or just
when they’re traveling want – nay NEED – to carry more. so what do we do? we turn to messenger bags. and while i love chrome and timbuk2, sometimes i like to rock something with a little more style and a little less cordura.

the sidekick bag is designed for lomo-crazed artistic types to carry around their camera and more. but even if you don’t rock the crazy lomo styles, you can still rock this bag – or bags actually. the sidekick is a small bag and a large bag that you can carry separately or combine together.

the small bag has two pockets and is big enough for a camera and a few gadgets. it would look pretty cool worn around the waist all japanese hipster style. the big bag holds a small laptop and won’t look too girly over the shoulder. together they just look like some stylish man bag from jack spade or something, but at a fraction of the cost.

it comes in black or white; black might be a little more manly if you’re worried about that. both bags have “rule #1: take your camera everywhere you go” on them. it’s embossed on the black one and printed in gold on the white. yah. the white might come off a little too feminine for most of us.
